Our scheme envisions play as a common ground, using the house to frame two zones on the site: the “quiet” front yard, and the communal backyard. The dedicated front yard preserves the existing oak tree and extends our house (and the future houses) into the Howard streetscape and neighborhood fabric of Fair Haven Heights.
Upon entering the house, a generous mudroom filters circulation between the shared common room and the residents’ private space. In each private space there are separate living rooms, bathrooms, and storage. In the common room, there are two separate kitchens, and two sets of appliances.
A thick wall in the common space houses utility zones – storage, laundry, pantries, closet – while also holding unexpected moments – reading nooks, skylights, book shelves. Relief from the ordinary in the form of play.
Ultimately, it is through play that we imagine new futures, learn to be human beings, and invent a better world.
