Situated in Aoyama, Japan, this project revisits the rich history of the public sentō (bathhouse) in the urban fabric of Tokyo. On a street dominated by starchitect facades, this bathhouse scrutinizes internal experience to create a respite from the tall and busy cityscape.
In plan, the building responds to two grid logics: the existing city geometry and a sheared grid. The building’s entrance mirrors the street corner, and features a bandai/cafe. As one begins the bathing experience, the main path acts as a continuation of the public streetscape, gradually descending into the ground as the bathing process progresses through a series of ovular pools formally confronting both grid logics. After passing individual washing/outdoor spaces and a collective washing space, the progression ends in a circular outdoor air bath deep below the city plane.
In this sense, the bathhouse becomes a well within the urban condition.
